Summary
This is a new full-length novel by Gu Byeong-mo, the author of THE OLD WOMAN WITH THE KNIFE. The story features a woman who can read others’ minds by touching their wounds, reflecting critically on what it means to ‘know another’ in the face of its true impossibility.
This story reveals the multi-layered relationship between a girl with a special ability and a man named Moon Oen, who tries to manipulate her while acting as her teacher, father, and lover. Moon Oen, who possesses massive wealth and power, gives a new name to the orphan girl and builds a grand mansion to keep her from others. The story unfolds as the narrator, a reading teacher, appears at the mansion. Each of them possesses their own misery and secrets. They distrust and act hostile toward each other, yet remain obsessed with learning about the others. The obsession eventually drives them to a catastrophe.
