This is a bold and spirited story of women who carve out their own path in life. With nothing to their names and no one to rely on, three women come together to spend the most radiant period of their lives as a team. Breaking away from the stereotypical image of conservative Korean women in the 1970s and ’80s, these characters embody the independence, wit, and magnetic charm that modern audiences crave.
In a world where a quick flick of the wrist can change everything — the world of pickpockets — we dive into the twilight of an era. The story unfolds in the early 1990s, when Korea’s Financial Real-Name System rendered pickpocketing nearly obsolete. In the whirlwind of a rapidly changing society, these women fight to survive and leave behind their mark.
Synopsis
As department stores begin to pop up across Myeong-dong in the 1970s, the once-quiet streets become crowded and chaotic. Hee-soo, a clumsy, small-time pickpocket, nearly gets caught stealing a handbag — until she is saved by two women with razor-sharp skills: the nimble-fingered “Machine” Lola and the quick-witted “Wind” Je-an.
They take Hee-soo under their wing, teaching her the trade, and the three women form a tight-knit team. Soon, a shadowy fixer named James, known as “The Boss,” offers to protect them — in exchange for a cut of their earnings.
As Korea’s economy surges during the development boom and major department stores open nationwide, the streets are flush with cash — and so begins the golden age of pickpocketing. But when a highly organized Japanese pickpocket ring enters Korea with superior skills and coordination, a fierce rivalry begins.
Lines are crossed, even the sacred rule of never stealing from “their own kind.” The authorities tighten the net. Eventually, the women are caught, while James escapes. In prison, they bide their time, vowing revenge.
Years later, they’re released. But the world has changed — wallets now contain credit cards instead of cash, and their old methods no longer apply. Just as they struggle to adapt, James reappears with one last job — a deal too big, and too personal, to turn down...
