Business Description
Business Overview
- WDG’s core business is divided into two main areas: original content production and contract production services. These are further categorized into tournament operations, broadcast production, marketing/events, sponsorships/advertising, media rights sales, and ticketing. Additional revenue streams include venue rentals and related services.
- WDG holds full commercial rights for the Overwatch Champions Series (OWCS), Blizzard's official professional Overwatch esports league in Asia (covering Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, and Australia). The Korean league and the Asia Championship are broadcast both online and offline from a 520-seat esports arena located near Hongik University in Mapo-gu, Seoul.
- OWCS Asia is gaining massive popularity in Japan, with over 40,000 concurrent viewers, solidifying its position as one of the top 2 most stable esports leagues in the region. (As of late February, OWCS Japan ranked #16 on Twitch Japan and #201 globally.)
- Contract production services include prominent IPs such as LCK CL (Korea’s Tier 2 League of Legends league), VCT CL (Korea’s Tier 2 VALORANT league), The Finals, and TFT (Teamfight Tactics). Despite being contract productions, WDG holds comprehensive business rights including ad revenue from streams and ticket sales for most IPs.
- OWCS (Overwatch Champions Series), launched in 2024, is the official global professional Overwatch esports league. It is jointly operated by Blizzard and three regional commissioners: WDG (Asia), ESL FACEIT Group (EMEA/North America), and NetEase (China). In Korea, it is commonly known as "옵챔스".
- WDG's business model is built around fulfilling multiple key roles in the esports ecosystem:
1. League Office (akin to the NFL/NBA)
2. Broadcast Network (similar to ESPN)
3. Amateur Platform & Data Services (like MaxPreps), leveraging player participation and performance data for content and business development.
